Years of military dictatorship have brought a whole generation of Argentine show business artists to silence, or to exile. In the Nineties, "Menemism" thinned out independent theater companies. In 2001, the great crisis almost eliminated the last sparks of cultural initiative in this field.
Despite all this Buenos Aires does not give up, and remains the city with most theaters in the whole world, with more venues than Paris or New York. Today, in addition to the official theater halls of the famous Avenida Corrientes, also called the "porteñan Broadway", and the independent halls ("off Corrientes"), a new cultural venue is emerging in Argentina's capital.
Professional companies, affirmed playwrights and a new generation of theater professionals are representing their art in living rooms, readapted as sets, inside the historical houses of Buenos Aires's most traditional neighborhoods.
Whereas great ideological and political themes have extinguished themselves, three generations of Argentine artists come together and propose themselves to the public in a new, diminished dimension, in conformity with a contemporary and globalized necessity towards exploration and investigation of micro-social situations.
Doorways become ticket counters, patios are transformed in foyers, and fragments of stage setting decorate corridors and staircases assuming the character of oniric landscapes, introducing the guest/spectator to the drama he is about to experience.
Argentine theater is living a new youth thanks to unending creativity and an unyielding spirit of initiative which seems to nourish itself of great states of crisis, always capable of capturing new opportunities.
